  • Development of new willow varieties

    European Willow Breeding have since 2011 been breeding new salix clones from well defined parental clones. The 4 new varieties that has been produced will be available for sale 2013.

  • Willow cuttings is being planted

    Willow is being planted in form of cuttings, with help from a 4-rows planting machine. The capacity is around 1ha per hour.

  • Harvest with BioBaler

    Willow is harvested with a BioBaler by Anderson. The machine chops, chrush and bale the willow in one go for a more efficient handling of the biomass afterwards. The capacity is about 0.25 ha/h which gives roughly 20 bales a´500kg.

Plant breeding

Selections are made among off-spring from crosses between well defined parental clones. Varieties are then registered and certified for plant protection within EU. The plant breeding work of willow is performed by techniques that have been learned after many years of experience with the crop. The first crosses are made early in 2011 and a number of clones/potential varieties are now established on our experimental fields at Billeberga in south of Sweden. Economical support to the crossing work during 2012 and 2013 has been given from the Swedish Energy Agency. Eight varieties have been registered at the EC Plant Variety Office. Four of these have been fully tested and are now certified and ready for sale.

Certified:

  • Estelle. A cross between the varieties Inger and Sven
  • Wilhelm. A cross between the varieties Sherwood and Björn
  • Birgit. A cross between the varieties Inger and Olof
  • Erik. A cross between the varieties Tordis and Björn

Still under process:

  • Ester, a cross beteen the variety Linnéa and ”Shrubby willow” (certified in 2015)
  • Winter, a cros beteen the variety Tordis and a winter hardy Russian clone (certified in 2016)
  • Emma, a cross between Tordis and Olof (certified in 2016)
  • Bella, a cross beteen Inger and Wilhelm (certified 2016)

Also “varieties” under process can be produced and sold, but under their provisional names.

Next generation of varieties will contain material suited for drier and warmer regions, but also material for colder areas. This material will be placed in field trials on such places for evaluations as fast as possible.
